Privacy and cookies

The short version

You can read everything on this site without allowing analytics or personalised advertising. There are no accounts, no comments, no forms and no payments here. The site loads two things from Google: advertising, which asks for your consent where the law requires it, and Google Analytics, which only loads if you say yes.

Advertising

We use Google AdSense to show advertising. In the UK, the European Economic Area and Switzerland, Google's consent message lets you allow, refuse or manage the use of cookies and personal data for ads. You can change that choice at any time using Ad settings in the footer (it appears where the message applies).

Google and its advertising partners may use cookies to serve and measure ads, and, where you have agreed, to show ads based on your visits to this and other websites. Analytics

With your separate permission, Google Analytics measures visits to the site: which pages are read, roughly where visitors are (to the level of a country or city), what kind of device and browser they use, and which links to other websites they follow. It sets cookies whose names begin _ga. We use this only to see which parts of the guide are useful.

Analytics is not loaded at all until you choose Allow analytics. You can change your mind at any time with Analytics settings in the footer; choosing No thanks stops measurement and removes the cookies. Google's own privacy policy explains how it handles the data.

What the site keeps on your device

Your analytics answer is remembered in your browser's local storage under the name druss_analytics_choice, so that you are not asked on every page. It is not a cookie, it is never sent to us, and clearing your browser's site data removes it.

The fonts and images on this site are served from our own domain, so reading a page does not contact any font or image service.

Site operation

The site is a set of static pages delivered through Amazon Web Services (Amazon S3 and CloudFront). Like any web server, the delivery network processes your IP address, the page requested and your browser details in order to send you the page. We have not switched on access logging, so we do not keep a record of individual visits.

Your rights

Under UK data protection law you have rights over personal data about you, including the right to object to its use. In practice the only personal data involved in visiting this site is handled by Google, and the controls above let you refuse it. If you are unhappy with how your data has been handled you can complain to the Information Commissioner's Office.

Changes

If the site starts using another service that affects your privacy, this page will be updated before it does, and the review date at the top will change.
