Chareos

Chareos is the swordsman at the heart of Quest for Lost Heroes. Decades after the Nadir have overrun the Drenai lands, he is a quiet, disillusioned man living as a monk in the Gothir town of Talgithir and teaching the local earl's young men to fence. He is also a legend: one of the few survivors of the battle of Bel-Azar, the stand that kept the Gothir free of the Nadir, and the songs about that day have made him a hero he does not feel like. When a village youth named Kiall sets out to rescue a girl taken by Nadir slavers, Chareos is the one who steps in, first saving Kiall from a flogging and then, against his better judgement, joining the quest. The other heroes of Bel-Azar, the axeman Beltzer and the archers Finn and Maggrig, are drawn in after him. Chareos also carries a secret connected to the old Drenai nobility, and the book is careful about when it lets that out.
