Parmenion

Parmenion leads Gemmell's Greek pair, a fictional life built around the real Macedonian general. In Lion of Macedon he is a mothax in Sparta, a half-breed with a Macedonian mother and a Spartan father, and the young Spartan nobles never let him forget it. He is a fine runner and a natural strategist, and after a killing forces him out of Sparta he starts again in Thebes, a city under Spartan occupation, where he is drawn into the plot to free it. Years of mercenary command follow before he is invited to rebuild the Macedonian army for the young Philip II. Behind the history runs a second story: the sorceress Tamis has foreseen that he is needed against a dark power trying to enter the world. Dark Prince turns that thread into the main event. Out of favour with Philip, Parmenion is sent into a parallel Greece full of mythical creatures to rescue Philip's small son, Alexander, guided by the seeress Derae, a love he thought he had lost.
