Bane

Bane is Connavar's illegitimate son and the lead of Midnight Falcon. He has his father's unmistakable eyes, one brown and one green, so there is no hiding whose child he is, but Connavar refuses to claim him, and he grows up feared and resented in the highlands. Looking for somewhere he might be accepted, he crosses the sea, and for a while he finds it, until a cruel swordsman takes that life away from him. The middle of the novel puts him in the arenas of the empire of Stone as a gladiator, trained by an ageing fighter called Rage and living for revenge on the man who wronged him. Meanwhile the armies of Stone are preparing to cross to the Rigante lands, and Bane has to weigh his private grudge against the survival of the people who rejected him. The book is about a son who is his father's double in more ways than he would like, and about what the two of them owe each other.
