Gaise Macon

Gaise Macon is the title character of Stormrider, the last Rigante novel, and one of the most divided heroes Gemmell wrote. He is the only son of the Moidart, the feared Varlish lord of Eldacre, a father who spent Gaise's childhood taking away anything the boy loved, and yet he carries a Rigante soul-name, Stormrider. When the book opens he is a cavalry officer serving the king loyally in a civil war among the Varlish. An old prophecy about a man with a golden eye has convinced the fanatical Lord Winterbourne, leader of the Redeemer Knights, that Gaise is destined to kill him, and Winterbourne sets out to make sure that never happens. Hunted by his own side, Gaise is pushed towards an alliance with the Rigante outlaw Kaelin Ring, a sworn enemy with whom he shares an ancestor. His friend Mulgrave watches with growing unease as the war hardens him into a colder commander than he ever meant to be, and the Moidart turns out to be a far stranger father than he seemed.
